Avoid eating heavy meals at least 2 hours prior to class and wear comfortable clothing- nothing too baggy. You may want to bring a towel.

Also, as a courtesy to others, please avoid wearing synthetic perfumes and lotions to class as some are sensitive to the smells.

Yoga is something that I had wanted to learn for a long time before I started classes a year ago; but I had no idea that learning Yoga would have such a positive impact on me.

From the first class at Sacred Garden I could feel the benefits. I visited other studios and took some other classes, but always with trepidation that I would further injure my weak, sore wrist. Teachers were helpful and advised me how to modify poses to reduce the strain on my wrist. After just one Beginner's class at Sacred Garden, however, I could feel an improvement in my wrist. Through Anusara Yoga I have worked on my body to improve my wrist, not worked around my wrist. I feel stronger than I have felt in years even though I have always been physically active.

The care that the instructors take with alignment and with how poses are done has strengthened all parts of my body that are involved – from my toes to the top of my head. I appreciate that in this style of Yoga the process of achieving the poses is as important as the poses themselves – and I can feel that my flexibility and strength have both been improved by practicing Yoga.

The rewards for me from Yoga go beyond the physical: I have felt increased confidence from finding my body willing to try things that surprise me – like handstands and backbends. Classes are always full of surprises and enjoyable challenges, and my ability to face the challenges on the mat boosts my confidence off the mat.

Additionally, I find that the keen attention I need to pay to my movements and alignment to be meditative in the same way that I found practicing Japanese tea ceremony to be meditative and calming. Since returning from Japan many years ago, I had missed the “meditation in motion” I achieved from the ritualized tea ceremony. I find that Yoga gives me a similar experience.

Though I am a new student of Yoga and I am sure there are many more ways it can be beneficial, Yoga has already helped me. I have been fortunate not just to find Yoga, but to find Sacred Garden Studio, where a positive, caring, patient attitude is a gift for each student each class. Whatever day I have had, whatever is going on in the world outside, it disappears while I am in the studio, and I emerge renewed with a calm, positive feeling when I leave. Though I am already reaping the benefits of practicing Yoga, I am sure this is just the start of my journey.
